This is a thoroughly excellent introduction to the subject and the author goes to great lengths to break down the structure of his sentences are put together. The style of the book is easy to read and I once found it to be an invaluable source when I first began studying the subject. It is clearly a book for beginners but looking back over it now, one can clearly see how complex it could have quickly become if the author had chosen to handle the material differently. The key to a book like this is pacing and Andrew Carnie does it very well.
If you are new to the subject, it is a great introduction with some nice examples of syntax structure. My only criticism would be that there are not enough examples but it was probably quite a decision as to what to include and what to leave out. The last thing a student needs is to overwhelmed with unnecessary complexity at the outset. This book goes a long way to alleviating that issue.
